Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast will be represented in all disciplines this weekend at the Class 1A and 2A state track and field finals in Winter Park.
A full list of area qualifiers follows. Some notes behind the names:
* John Carroll’s Justin Osking, who has captured 1A state gold in the discus (2009) and shot put (2010), is the favorite to capture both this year. Osking, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound senior, qualified for state with a 175-foot, 7-inch throw, nearly 20 feet better than the next-best state qualifier. Osking’s personal best is 190 feet. He put the shot 56 feet, 5 inches, which was three feet further than the second-best state qualifier. He is signed to UCF.
* Pope John Paul II senior Stephanie Schappert is looking for repeat 1A gold in the 800 and 1600. Schappert, a Villanova signee, is the state’s top qualifier in the 800 (2:15.23; her previous best was 2:13.93) and is second-seeded in the 1600 (4:55.24). She should have a strong challenge from Plantation-American Heritage sixth-grader Daesha Rogers, who qualified about a second behind Schappert in the 800 and a second ahead of her in the 1600.
* Suncoast has three junior sprinters in the hunt for gold. Davison Colimon is the 2A’s top qualifier in the 110 hurdles (14.21) and Antwan Wright is the second-seed in the 100 (10.49) and the 200 (21.18). Classmate Gabriel Aird is seeded second in the 300 hurdles (38.71). The Chargers also sent several relay teams to Winter Park: girls 4×100, boys 4×100 and boys 4×400.
* Youth is a theme of the 1A relays. Benjamin’s girls 4×800 relay team has two sophomores, a junior and an eighth-grader, Ashley Reback, who also qualified for state in the 1600 and 3200. King’s Academy’s girls 4×400 has two sophomores, a senior and an eighth-grader. The youngest group is King’s Academy’s girls 4×800, which has two sophomores, a seventh-grader and a ninth-grade anchor leg.
This is not completely remarkable among small schools, where some relay teams consist entirely of middle school teams. Oak Hill, a private school in Gainesville, has a ninth-grader, a junior and two sixth-graders on its girls 4×800.
* Class 1A events will be held Friday; Class 2A on Saturday. Both days, field events begin at 1 p.m., running event prelims start at 4 and running event finals are at 6:30.
